SUMMARY:Ginza Holiday Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:About Ginza and Ho Etsu Taiko\n \nAug 9-11 2019: The Midwest Buddhist Temple’s long-running summer festival is a staple of Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood and one of Ho Etsu’s favorite festivals to perform. Ginza is our chance to give back by performing on the festival stage as supporting entertainment\, collaborating with the MBT Taiko ensemble and\, in between shows\, volunteering at the Ginza food stands and ticket counters. \nCan’t wait until August? SUMMARY:Ginza Holiday Festival
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout Ginza and Ho Etsu Taiko\nAug 10-12: The Midwest Buddhist Temple’s long-running summer festival is a staple of Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood and one of Ho Etsu’s favorite festivals to perform. Ginza is our chance to give back by performing on the festival stage as supporting entertainment\, collaborating with the MBT Taiko ensemble and\, in between shows\, volunteering at the Ginza food stands and ticket counters. \nHo Etsu performs several times throughout the weekend and showtimes are posted below. There is a $5 donation to enter the Ginza Holiday Festival but with the entertainment\, shopping\, exhibits and food\, it is totally worth it! And for this special event\, we will play our latest piece “Poston” – an original composition by Ho Etsu’s own Emily Harada. “Poston” honors the experiences of her grandparents as they were incarcerated in the Poston Relocation camp during WWII. \nThis annual ‘Day of Remembrance’ is hosted by the Japanese American Service Committee (website\, Facebook event).[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]About “DAY OF REMEMBRANCE 2018” \nEach year\, Chicago’s Japanese American community comes together to remember President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s signing of Executive Order 9066\, which led to the incarceration of more than 120\,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. \nThis year’s program features: \n\nA keynote address by Dale Minami\, a civil rights attorney who is best known for serving as the coordinating attorney on the legal team for the coram nobis cases related to Fred Korematsu\, Gordon Hirabayashi\, and Minoru Yasui\, all of whom had their convictions upheld in controversial WWII era Supreme Court decisions. As the lead attorney on Fred Korematsu’s coram nobis case\, he successfully was able to get the Korematsu conviction vacated.\nFollowing the keynote address will be a panel discussion moderated by Chicago History Museum president Gary T. Johnson with Dale Minami and Chicago civil rights attorney Azam Nizamuddin.\nThe program will conclude with a Taiko drum performance of the piece “Poston” by Ho Etsu Taiko.\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text]This program serves as a reminder of the fragility of civil liberties in times of crisis and the importance of remaining vigilant in protecting the rights and freedoms of all. \nDay of Remembrance is sponsored by the Chicago Japanese American Council\, the Chicago Japanese American Historical Society\, the Japanese American Citizen League–Chicago Chapter (JACL Chicago)\, the JASC – Japanese American Service Committee\, and the Japanese Mutual Aid Society of Chicago.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:"Then They Came for Me" exhibit closing
DESCRIPTION: \nDate: Sunday November 19\, 2017\nTime: 6:00 PM\nCost: Free\nLocation: Alphawood Gallery \nWe are honored to have been asked to perform for the closing of “Then They Came for Me”. Through this performance we will return to our foundation\, commemorating the influence of the Japanese-American experience on our music\, our origins\, and taiko in America by helping to close out Alphawood Gallery’s exhibit on the Japanese American WWII incarceration. \n \nAbout “THEN THEY CAME FOR ME”\nAlphawood Gallery has partnered with the Japanese American Service Committee (JASC) to produce the Gallery’s first original exhibition\, “Then They Came for Me: Incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII and the Demise of Civil Liberties.” This exhibition examines a dark episode in U.S. history when\, in the name of national security\, the government incarcerated 120\,000 citizens and legal residents during World War II without due process or other constitutional protections to which they were entitled. Executive Order 9066\, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19\, 1942\, set in motion the forced removal and imprisonment of all people of Japanese ancestry living on or near the West Coast. During this 75th anniversary year of the executive order\, we look back at this shameful past to learn lessons for our present and future in the face of new challenges encouraged by fear-mongering and racism at the highest levels of government.

The single performance will be held at The Hideout on Sunday\, Nov. 5\, at 6 p.m. Joining the stage will be special guests Sen Morimoto (lyricist) and Ken Yasui (drums). \n  \nAbout On Ensemble\nOn Ensemble is at the forefront of a growing artistic movement in the taiko (Japanese ensemble drumming) world. Led by childhood friends Shoji Kameda and Masato (Maz) Baba\, On Ensemble has made a name for itself by infusing the powerful rhythms of taiko with overtone singing\, odd meter grooves and soaring melodies. \nFor all of their avant-garde musical explorations\, On Ensemble is supported by one of Japan’s most important traditional-culture bearers\, Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten\, instrument maker to the emperor of Japan. This support empowers On Ensemble to utilize authentic\, rare Japanese instruments in its fearless exploration of taiko. \nFrom outdoor festivals and concert halls to gymnasiums and classrooms\, On Ensemble shares its unique music and outreach programs with audiences throughout the United States and Canada. The group tours regularly from large metropolitan areas to small rural communities and plays in everything from large performing arts venues and music festivals to small club and art spaces. Past performances include the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts\, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center\, University of Hawai’i Hilo\, California Worldfest\, Grand Performances in downtown Los Angeles\, Shibuya O-nest (Tokyo)\, National Theater of Japan (Tokyo)\, Edmonds Center for the Arts (WA)\, Juan De Fuca Festival (WA) the Oregon Bach Festival\, a Ohio Arts Council IMPACT tour\, a tour of Montana and Idaho with stops in Mountain Home\, Salmon\, Sandpoint\, Dillon\, Missoula\, Helena and Whitefish. Ho Etsu draws from traditional Japanese musical styles and a broad variety of contemporary music to create a uniquely Chicago sound with global roots. \nFounded in 1997 at the Midwest Buddhist Temple in Chicago by Lynne and Jerry Matsumoto\, the group is now under the direction of their son\, Jason Matsumoto. The ensemble’s familial lineage is mirrored by its significant taiko lineage – with roots stretching back to the first-ever taiko group in Chicago: Midwest Buddhist Temple (“MBT”) Taiko founded in 1977. Ho Etsu has grown from a youth group into an adult performing ensemble in its own right\, learning traditional drumming styles with an emphasis on self-expression and creativity. Always looking to explore new sounds\, the group has collaborated with musicians from around the world\, including the Chicago Harp Quartet\, the Mozawa arts collaborative\, Irish folk musicians\, internationally-acclaimed Japanese folk artists Akira and Raiya Katogi\, and award-winning On Ensemble. \nWebsite: www.hoetsu.org\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/hoetsutaiko\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hoetsutaiko/\nYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/user/HoEtsu\nPress Kit: https://www.hoetsu.org/press-kit/

SUMMARY:SoFar presents Ho Etsu Taiko
DESCRIPTION: \nDate: Thursday October 26th\, 2017\nTime: 8:00 PM to 10:30PM (multiple artists)\nLocation: it’s a secret!\nTicketing Link: Go to this link\, click the “Attend OCTOBER 26th WEST LOOP series” button.\n \nA little explanation about his event\nWe love exposing new audiences to taiko. Our mission is to spread joy through each and every drumbeat. And when we come across an audience member that’s never seen the craft\, it is especially rewarding. We also really love Chicago…and secrets. So when we heard about SoFar’s concept\, we were immediately interested in working with them. \nSoFar runs an invite-only music series that aims to create a supportive space for musicians to present their work. Rules like “no talking while music is being played” applies to all guests. They highlight venues across Chicago that defines its character. And since the audience first learns who will be performing when they arrive at the venue on the day of the show\, the probability is extremely high that the experience is new and unique for audience and musician alike! \nSo\, we can’t offer a guarantee on tickets for this show but you can always try your luck with the “attend” link above. OR\, you can reserve your ticket for our Sunday\, Nov. 5\, show at Chicago’s iconic venue\, The Hideout\, for the return of the Ho Etsu + On Ensemble collaboration.
